Washington Named SIAC Player of The Year

Tuskegee’s Derrick Washington was named SIAC Player of The Year after rushing for nearly 1,400 yards in the 2012 regular season.

ATLANTAThe Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announces the 2012 Football All-Conference team as voted by the SIAC Football Coaches Association.

Leading the 2012 All-Conference Team, is SIAC Player of the Year Derrick Washington of Tuskegee, who also was named SIAC Offensive Player of the Year. Fort Valley State’s LeRon Furr and Clark Atlanta’s Vauchard Goodridge was named SIAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He was one of nine Tuskegee players named to the All-Conference Team.

Washington, a senior from Raymore, MO, led the SIAC in rushing with 1,399 yards rushing (139.9 yards per game) and 13 touchdowns on 8.1 yards per carry. Washington, a transfer from the University of Missouri, ranks 8th overall in rushing in Division-II. Washington rushed for 224 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns to lead Tuskegee to its first SIAC Football Championship since 2009. He was also named MVP of the SIAC Championship game.

Furr, a 6-foot-3 junior from Columbus, GA, led Fort Valley State with 100 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and two interceptions. His 29 tackles for losses leads the SIAC. Furr, one of Fort Valley’s big playmakers on defense was named Defensive MVP of the Fountain City Classic and SIAC Championship Game, in a losing effort.

Goodridge, a 6-foot-2 defensive lineman from St. Petersburg, FL, was a nightmare for opposing offenses this season. Despite facing many double teams, the senior finished the season with 51 tackles, 16 tackles for losses, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries for Clark Atlanta this year.

Clark Atlanta’s Se’Cortney Gardner was named SIAC Freshman of the Year. The linebacker from Prattville, AL had a stellar campaign finishing the season with 62 tackles, two tackles for losses, and a sack. He also had three quarterback hurries for the Panthers this season.

Tuskegee head football coach Willie Slater was selected as SIAC Coach of the Year. In his sixth season under helm, Slater led Tuskegee to a 9-1 record, West Division Title, and 2012 SIAC Football Championship.

Headlining the 2012 SIAC All-Academic Team is Deshon Floyd of Kentucky State. Floyd, a junior Criminal Justice major from Frankfurt, KY, led the team with a 3.957 grade point average. He is followed by Lane College’s Evan Yabu’s 3.939 grade point average.
