Spelman To Eliminate Athletics

Spelman will eliminate all intercollegiate athletics effecitive at the end of the 2012-13 academic school year.

Big news coming out of Atlanta today. Spelman, the nation’s most visible all-female HBCU, is eliminating all athletics at the end of the 2012-2013 academic year. According to a report by  no school has withdrawn from the NCAA in over a decade. Spelman currently participates in DII of the NCAA.

The school is currently engaged in a campaign to raise $13 million to renovate their gymnasium. There are currently about 80 students involved in athletics. Spelman President Beverly Daniel Tatum says this move won’t discourage young women from attending the 131 year-old institution.

“Athletics has never been a very big part of the Spelman experience,” Tatum told Inside Higher Ed. “Most young women who want to come to Spelman are choosing Spelman for reasons other than our intercollegiate athletics program. So I think the students who really want to be at Spelman still will want to be at Spelman.”

While this must have been a tough decision, hopefully it is the right one for Spelman. Many of our HBCUs are currently in over their heads in regards to athletic affiliations. If those institutions can’t come up with a solid, executable plans, maybe they should follow Spelman’s lead and act in the best efforts of their students-past, present and future.
