DURHAM, N.C. – Following North Carolina Central University’s 37-20 nationally-televised gridiron victory over Hampton University on ESPNU last Thursday night, a trio of Eagles earned MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) Weekly honors with Tazmon Foster (Henderson, N.C.) being named Defensive Player of the Week, Ryan Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md.) earned Rookie of the Week accolades along with Arthur Goforth (Columbia, S.C.) who was named Special Teams player of the week, the conference announced Monday.
Foster ignited a 20-point second quarter with his second defensive touchdown of the season when he returned a Travis Champion pass 80 yards to paydirt scoring the first points for the maroon and gray on the night. He also recorded eight tackles that included four solo stops and recovered a fumble during that explosive second quarter.
Smith posted seven tackles, four solo with his second interception of the season and added a fumble recovery for the Eagles. Smith’s pick squelched any opportunity for the Pirates to comeback late in the fourth quarter.
Goforth ended the night with 119 all-purpose yards, but his 90-yard kickoff return literary sealed the victory for NCCU after Hampton cut a 20-point deficit to three at 23-20 in the fourth quarter. It was Goforth’s second return touchdown of the season, with other coming on a punt return against Savannah State.
Other top performers included redshirt junior quarterback Jordan Reid (High Point, N.C.) who connected on 50-percent of his passes (11-for-22) for 193 yards with two touchdowns in the win over Hampton.
In other news, NCCU is currently ranked in both the BoxtoRow FCS National Media and Coaches poll sitting in sixth in the media poll with 104 total points and moving to fifth in the coaches poll with 97 points overall.
The Eagles next hit the field on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 from Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach, Fla. where NCCU and Bethune-Cookman square off in a contest between the only unbeaten squads in league action. The NCCU Sports Network will begin live coverage from the Sunshine state at 3:30 p.m. with the Champps Pregame Show on WNCU 90.7 FM.
